About Us
The
nursery was started in the early 1970s by David
Mansfield-Thomas. The nursery, Little Heath Farm, is currently run by
husband and wife team John and Jan Spokes. They
had been exhibiting alpines for a number of years at various local
shows when the opportunity to run Little Heath Farm arose. They have
now been at the nursery for ten years or so and have managed to turn
what was once a charming but somewhat neglected site into a quiet and
picturesque cottage garden.
The
nursery grows an
extensive range of hardy plants, specialising in alpines and herbaceous
perennials, alongside shrubs, ferns and trees, with many unusual
varieties
scattered in all the categories.

The site is also occupied by a tea-room, where you can sit and enjoy a piece of home-made cake and a pot of tea. The farm is also home to 'Sanuk', a tribal arts and crafts shop stocking items from around the world, many of which are fair-trade, as well as Hertfordshire honey (some hives are just below the nursery) and local free-range eggs. In the summer months, sitting outside by the pond and beneath the grapevine, it is possible to share the space with the numerous butterflies and birds that visit the farm. The perfect way to relax after an afternoon pottering around the nursery.
